This temple was originally named Wat Ngoen after the founder. He was the husband to the sister of King Rama I who was the monarch from 1782 to 1809. King Rama I’s queen restored the temple when it was beginning to deteriorate and made it into a royal temple. It was again restored by King Rama IV and ordered the name to be changed to Wat Ratchada Thitharn.
It is considered one of the most valuable heritage buildings from the Bangkok era. The temple possesses a stone seat on which Kinf Rama IV and King Rama V sat while donating gifts to the public. This is important because they were two of the most beloved Thai kings and they were both present at this site.
The ordination hall (ubosot) was built in the Chinese style, without any roof finals that is traditional in Thai styling. The principal Buddha image is made of bronze during the reign of King Rama I and is in the subduing Mara (satan) posture.
