Day Trip from Taipei to Keelung by Train for 41 NTD - Taiwan 2025

Taiwan is a very tourist friendly country. There is so much to see and do. It is super easy to jump on a train from Taipei to see the port city of Keelung. The train is very inexpensive and easy to ride.

Keelung, officially known as Keelung City, is a major port city situated in the northeastern part of Taiwan. The city is a part of the Taipei–Keelung metropolitan area, along with its neighbors, New Taipei City and Taipei, respectively. Nicknamed the Rainy Port for its frequent rain and maritime role, the city is Taiwan's second largest seaport (after Kaohsiung). The city was founded by the Spanish Empire in 1626, then called La Santisima Trinidad.

Keelung has a lot of history and many things to see. It’s worth at least one day to explore as well as an evening at the largest night market in northern Taiwan. During my stay in Taiwan this was the highlight of my trip and I can’t wait to return.

For 41 NTD it’s very inexpensive and everything is easy to navigate. I walk you ...

Liuhe Night Market 六合觀光夜市 - Great Night Out in Central Kaohsiung City - Taiwan 2025

Liuhe Night Market 六合觀光夜市

Liuhe Night Market, or Liuhe Tourist Night Market (Liouhe Tourist Night Market), is a centrally located night market that is popular with tourists. During the day, Liuhe 2nd Rd is a functioning road; but at night, it is blocked off and transforms into a pedestrian friendly night market.

Liuhe market dates back to the 1940s, making it one of the oldest night markets in Kaohsiung. Today, there are over 130 food stalls line both sides of the street. Most are standalone food stalls while some have some seating around the food cart or in the center of the walking part of rhe market.

Even though the prices tend to be higher (but still cheap), the open-air market is worth visiting. The area has many excellent accommodations, making visiting the night market even more accessible from the nearby hotels.

This is one of the best night markets in the city and should definitely be part of your itinerary if you visit the city.

Old City of Zuoying 左營舊城 - First Fortified City in Taiwan - Kaohsiung City Taiwan 2025

The Old City of Zuoying 左營舊城 also known as the Old City of Fongshan County 鳳山縣舊城 is a walled city located in Zuoying District, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. It was built during the Qing rule period and is one of the first Taiwanese cities fortified by a defensive wall. The city was administrated under the Fongshan County 鳳山縣 of Taiwan Prefecture.

The early Qing dynasty prohibited the construction of defensive walls in Taiwan to prevent rebellions, so the city never obtained its wall until 1721. In 1721, Chu Yi-kuei led a rebellion in southern Taiwan and captured the county, which had no protection, and ruined many government buildings. After the incident, the Qing permitted building defensive walls in Taiwan. The governor of Tsoying County Liu Kwang-shi (劉光泗) built the first city wall made of mud with a moat system in 1722.

A whole new stone wall was completely built in 1826. At the time, it was one of the most advanced city walls in Taiwan.

Cijin Beach in Kaohsiung City - Beautiful Black Sand Beach in the South of Taiwan - 2025

Cijin Beach in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, is a unique destination known for its distinctive black sand and picturesque coastal scenery. The beach is approximately 1.5 km long and lined with palm trees, offering visitors a chance to enjoy the sun and sea.

Swimming is not recommended due to strong currents, making it more suitable for sunbathing, strolling, or engaging in beach activities like sandcastle building during the Annual Black Sand Castle Festival in July and August.

The beach is easily accessible via a short ferry ride from Kaohsiung, and once there, visitors can explore various attractions such as the Rainbow Church, a popular photo spot, and the Cijin Shell Museum, though it may not always be open. The area around the beach is also home to numerous seafood restaurants and stalls, serving fresh and affordable dishes.

You can rent bikes or scooters to explore the island, with bike rental options available near the ferry terminal.
